RICKY GARDINER- Guitar/Vocals
ALAN PARKER- Organ
VIRGINIA SCOTT- Mellotron
GORDON SELLAR- Bass
RAYMOND WILSON - Drums

* I can not be totally positive that this is the correct line up for this preformance.
The biggest name in question here would be VIRGINIA SCOTT.
It is around this time that she may have already left the band.
To the best of my knowledge she did not appear on their 1972 release "Pathfinder".
At the time of this recording "Pathfinder" is not out yet and the songs are premired Live here.

BEGGAR'S OPERA is from Scotland, their name is derived from a novel by the poet John Gray in 1728.
BEGGARS OPERA made a lot of records but remained acting in the shade of most progressive rock bands.
Their debut-album "Act one" ('70) contains fluent and tasteful organ driven progrock with powerful "Sixties" sounding guitarwork.
The long track "Raymond's Road" is a splendid tribute to the "classics" featuring Mozart's A la Turka, Bach's Toaccata in d-fuga en Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite on the Hammond organ.
The second album "Waters of Change" ('71) is build around the dual keyboardplay of Alan Park and newcomer Virginia Scott and the distinctive, a bit cynical vocals of Gardiner.
The nine tracks are beautiful symphonic landscapes with many organ solos, some swelling and glorious Mellotron waves (like The MOODY BLUES and early KING CRIMSON) and fine electric guitarwork.
On the third LP "Pathfinder" BEGGARS OPERA seems to have reached its pinnacle: strong and alternating compositions with lush keyboards (Mellotron, organ, piano and harpsichord),
powerful electric guitarplay and many shifting moods (even Scottish folk with bagpipes).~ progarchives.com

David Bowie - Madison Square Garden (July 20, 1974) (FLAC)

David Bowie
Madison Square Garden
New York City
NY U.S.A.
July 20, 1974

Source: XLII90 --> Audacity --> Wav --> FLAC Front End Level 8

Description: Decent sounding audience tape from the 1974 tour, I think one of the better ones from '74 not including the Maloney recordings, et al. Bowie says "Good evening New York" as an identifier during the intro to All The Young Dudes. This show is missing both Jean Genie and Rock N'Roll Suicide, and has a few small cuts, most are between songs but are barely noticeable. Watch That Man has a cut toward the end of the song. All in all a good show and a good performance.

NOTES:

Tracks 1-3 also appear on the Metal Dawn bootleg, though are slightly different. This source is less muffled and has more in the treble end. I increased the bass a bit and took out a couple of pops, before smoothing out the very end of the Vug fade.

On my original cassette, you could actually hear the clunk of the buttons and the guy recording it walking away from the tape recorder!!

Track 3, incorrectly named on the Metal Dawn bootleg, also has the final keyboard and drums stab at the end.

Tracks 4 & 5 do not seem to appear anywhere else.

The Bonzo Dog Band
October 18, 1969
The Fillmore East

There isn't much circulating live Bonzo Dog Band which makes the somewhat marginal sound quality here very acceptable to my ears. Please check the samples to decide for yourself. I don't think this has ever been seeded here before.

Note: The Bonzos were the openers on October 17 & 18, 1969 to The Kinks and Spirit (who were the headliners). There was an early show and a late show - I do not know which set this recording is from.

Wow. This one is really special. . . . .

Digging through the Archives here I found this tape, which I had totally forgotten about. It was labeled " Mallard Demo ". I was soon to find out that it was not actually a Mallard
demo, but instead THE MAGIC BAND Demo ( ! ! ) . . . recorded shortly after the guys all left CAPTAIN BEEFHEART & THE MAGIC BAND in 1974. The music here is really great and I am thinking that it will be "new" to many folks. Enjoy !

(Yeah I know their is a picture of the Captain for this post, even though he is not included in the demo. But I can't find a picture of the Magic Band at all from this time period)

Frank Zappa-Rockpile,Toronto (Late Show) (2-23-69) (FLAC)

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
Rockpile
Toronto, Canada
1969 02 23 late show

~~ From 4th gen stage recording ~~

The next in our series of Toronto '69 upgrades, one of the famous Don Preston stage recordings. An entertaining show with much audience interaction and MOI antics. FZ's voice is barely audible, but because of the relative cleanness of this version, it's possible to boost the volume in the quiet parts.
My 4th gen was lacking the tuning-up section, which I've added from an unknown gen tape.

FZShows entry:

1969 02 23 - Rockpile, Toronto, Canada
Late show
55 min, Stage, B+
With André ??? on vocals (*).
A.k.a 1969 05 and 1969 02 23 - Convocation Hall, Toronto.
intro, The Orange County Lumber Truck Medley, instrumental, The String Quartet, Igor's Boogie / Little Doo-wop, Call Any Vegetable, Redneck Eats, Stone City*, Trouble Every Day

This version: 55:28 min, Stage, B+

Lineage: Stage recording > Reel-to-reel tape (4th gen) > CDR (standalone burner) > EAC > SoundForge 10.0 (speed correction, editing, tracking) > Trader's Little Helper (flac level 7)

Lineage fill: Maxell XLII tape, unknown gen > Denon DRM-800A > M-Audio Audiophile 2496 > SoundForge 10.0 (minor EQ adjustment) > merging with main source

From Bassman's David Bowie Page:

Another great Australian release! I had never heard of a tape of this Cleveland show before, so it was a very nice and big surprise when this CD was released. It is the complete show, and it is easy to see that it is a late US '72 show, becuase the omission of MY DEATH in favour of the "new" song DRIVE-IN SATURDAY. Before DRIVE-IN SATURDAY Bowie asks the people with tape recorders to leave, because now they are going to play a new unreleased song! The strange title comes from ANDY WARHOL where he sings "va va va voom" before the guitar solo part. The sound quality is rather good, and the cover is smashing. A short story about the US Tour of 1972 is told on the cover. A true must!

This is from John Weather’s first tour with the band, when they opened for a Jimi Hendrix film, Jimi Plays Berkeley. it’s also the only known tape to include the song Schooldays.

Frank Zappa-Paris (December 15, 1970) (FLAC)

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention
Palais Gaumont
Paris, France
1970 12 15

~~ From 3rd gen soundboard recording ~~

An upgrade to our current version, and possibly the lowest generation available. Here's what my source, LC, told me about it:
"The board of the MOI at Gaumont Palace, Paris, 12/15/70 originated from the KSAN FM tape archive. A friend had access to their tape library and ran a copy. I’m relatively certain that is how that board surfaced."

The tape suffers from some drop-outs, especially the first minutes. I experimented with removing them, but decided to leave them as they were.

FZShows entry:

1970 12 15 - Palais Gaumont, Paris, France
105 min, SBD, A+
With Jean Luc Ponty on violin (*). Parts of this concert are available as pro-shot video and on Disconnected Synapses - BTB2.
Call Any Vegetable, The Sanzini Brothers, Penis Dimension, A Pound For A Brown, Sleeping In A Jar, Porko The Magnificent (incl. There's No Business Like Show Business, I Can't Give You Anything But Love), Sharleena, improvisations (incl. La Marseillaise), The Air, Dog Breath, Mother People, You Didn't Try To Call Me, King Kong* (incl Ain't She Sweet?, Blue Danube, and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes), Who Are The Brain Police?*

This version: 107:29 min, SBD, A+/A (mono)

The Band:

Mick Rodgers - guitar,voc.
Chris Slade - drums

One of my earliest off air radio recordings.
KMET-FM Live broadcasts every Saturday night from the BBC transcription discs.
This is from the original 1974 airing of this show in Los Angeles.
Lots of clean up needed for this one.
Many Pops and Crackles from the transcription disc were repaired.
I could not get it all so some surface noise still remains.
A few audio stream breaks were spliced back together (I think they came from my DAT).
Audacity was used to do this editing and to re-sample at 44.1 kHz.
Overall this tape has good stereo seperation and a minimum of hiss.
Classic BBC Radio.
