David Bowie-Freddi And The Dreamer-The Arnold Corn Sessions
David Bowie-Freddi And The Dreamer
The Arnold Corn Sessions
Studio outtakes, demos and official versions
Label: SWITCH ON! DEVIL KWSK RECORDS 99-04
Released: 1999
Total Running Time:59m37s
Notes:
A very nice disc with songs recorded during the short Arnold Corns era in 1971. The things that are "new" on this CD are three new versions of LOOKING FOR A FRIEND, one of MOONAGE DAYDREAM and one of HANG ON TO YOURSELF (with Gene Vincent!). The rest of the songs have been released on other discs. The sound quality is excellent, except for the Gene Vincent track. That track is only good! Some funny liner notes, and some really good information about the Arnold Corns project! A true must!

GONG - 1973/1974 - "The Mushroom Tapes"
1-Zero The Hero And The Witch's Spell (14:00)
2-Fohat Digs Holes In Space (16:59)
3-Eat That Phonebook sax intro (6:41)
4-Other Side Of The Sky (8:19)

6-Flying Teapot (0:07)
7-I Never Glid Before (8:17)
8-Flute Salad / Love Is How Y Make It (6:18)
Notes:
2) On the fast tempo coda - 13:18 - "Eat That Phonebook" is sung repeatedly
3) Sax intro at 6:05
5) Why Are We Sleeping? at 4:29
6) Teapot tape played at ridiculous speed - a perfect mystery
7) Glid at 5:45
8) Slightly different than on "Angel's Egg"
From Calyx website:
Following Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth's decision to take a break, newcomer Steve Hillage is
asked to lead an alternate line-up of the band, christened ParaGong, including veteran Didier
Malherbe, and other recent recruit Tim Blake; for a while, ex-Moving Gelatine Plates bassist
Didier Thibault (who had been recommended by Gomelsky to replace Moze in Magma a few months
before) joins the band; setlist includes Kevin Ayers' "Why Are We Sleeping" and an early version
of "I Never Glid Before".
Much hiss (no dolby) but the music is worth it. No dates and venues.

The sound quality is rather fine to my ears, except it suddenly degenerates in the encores. I preferred not to include the final track as it had become totally unlistenable at that point; in contrast "Mama's Boogie" still sounds fine.

Arthur was back in the UK and touring after many years away, bringing with him a bunch of Texan musicians who of course had nothing to do with the original Crazy World. This gig was the day before the London Marquee show that was taped and issued on CD as Order From Chaos, hence the very similar set list. Great set though!!

Very decent sounding audience recording with not much tape hiss. The Kinks played the 27th, 28th and 29th - the consensus seems to be that this is from either the 28th or 29th and probably from the 29th.

Notes:
This was originally released as a bonus on the bootleg "An Amateur Wouldn't Do This" - FA031.
This low gen cassette for 9-27-1970 sounds better than anything I've heard that has been previously
circulating. I think you will enjoy it very much. Also, notice that there are some versions of this date circulating that have AHM attached to it. That version should not be from this date since it contains no orchestra and they have been reported to have used an orchestra this day, therefore we have not included this song.

Pink Fairies At The BBC
The Pink Fairies At The BBC
In Session And In Concert 1970 and 1971
These performances were transferred from vinyl bootleg Uncle Harry on Italian label Get Back records issued in 1998. It also contained their performances of Do It and Uncle Harry from the Glastonbury Fayre however as they were officially released I had to drop them from this set. Besides these are all BBC recordings. The quality of the first two is slightly rough as if taken from an acetate but very listenable while the second two are a solid A- possibly from broadcast reels. The sound is extremely good and I have only applied the slightest tweaking to the volume levels and converted the recordings from analog to digital using DAT tape.
Tracks are:
01. Lucille
02. The Snake
These were first transmitted on Top Gear 1970-11-28
Line-up:
Paul Rudolph-guitar and vocals
Duncan Sanderson-bass
Russell Hunter-drums
Twink-the other drums
03. Johnny B Goode
04. Uncle Harry's Last Freakout
These were first transmitted on In Concert 1971-11-04
Line-up:
Paul Rudolph-guitar and vocals
Trevor Burton-guitar
Duncan Sanderson-bass
Russell Hunter-drums
These are exceptionally good performances from one of the truly great arse rocking live bands of the early 70's who didn't outstay their welcome. To quote Twink in the sleeve notes:
Enter the Pink Fairies. Our mission was to revitalise the scene with cosmic rock and roll while simultaneously sticking it to 'the man'. Four post-hippy rock'n'roll Robin Hoods with a record deal. That was the dream. The dream is just beginning...
Unfortunately for me it was a nightmare trying to figure out whether these recordings could be upped here at all as the same tracks have been released on a CD called Mandies and Mescaline Round At Uncle Harry's on Burning Airlines Records in 2001.

A pretty decent soundboard recording from this very unusual line-up!! Some distortion and drop outs here and their that was on the master source. But a very enjoyable and weird Canterbury/Jazzy/Fusion/Prog show!!

Glastonbury Fayre (1971)
Glastonbury Fayre 1971
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Glastonbury Fayre is a triple album released in 1972, comprised of performances by acts who had appeared at the Glastonbury Festival in 1971 (see Festival line-up 1971). The album came in a foldout poster sleeve in a printed PVC outer sleeve, with a 32 page illustrated booklet and a foldout Silver Pyramid, all designed by Barney Bubbles.
Although the performances are live, not all of the performances were actually recorded at the Festival.
